Get the App Pulse (by Brightspace for D2L), so you don't have to sign in to D2L all the time, and it will send you reminders! *I will also upload the schedule at: https://sisavanhhoughton.weebly.com/
Class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:45 AM-10:45 AM. There are weekly due dates on all the projects. Students will be using dropbox on D2L to send me progress images for specific points only if you have missed class. Check the dates on D2L and on our class website. Materials will be given out on the first day of class. Make sure you have your Monday-Sunday Pillboxes to store and transport your paints. You can transport your Turpenoid glass jars, but make sure the lid is tight. You have access to the studio 24/7 using your ID Card. Please email me asap possible if you have any problems. Use [email protected] instead of D2L email.
Project Descriptions over Six Assignments and an Overview of this Class:
1. Portrait Color Blocking Planar Assignment (100 Points) four due: Pick three personal portraits with nice lighting (families and friends) and print them out for class. I will hand out printed images of a well-known female artist. Absolutely NO fan art. Use four sheets of your 9x12" canvas paper pad. Trace images onto the canvas using transfer paper. Now mix up five to ten cool and warm colors and start blocking the shapes. Limited Palette: French Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red light, Cadmium Yellow Light, Viridian, Violet, Titanium White, and a tube of Gamblin medium. This assignment will teach you how to color spot and mix oil paints.
2. Landscape + Figure (30 Points) two due: You will be using two 9x12" gesso and stretched watercolor paper pads for this assignment. Use oil paints and with realistic to the semi-realistic style of painting. Limit your time from two to three hours per piece, so keep them simple but not a total abstraction. I suggest starting with the background, then the middle ground, and finally the foreground. Let the background dry before you start the foreground. A few artists for inspiration: Lisa Golightly, Katherine Bradford, Geoffrey Johnson, Michael Carson, Anne Seems, Terence Trouillot.
3. Verdaccio Tondo Painting (100 Points) one due: (Use 12”x12” round board). Take your own photos outside of class, and I will print them out for you. The board will need to be prepped with 4 coats of gesso and sand between coats. We will use only Oil paints only and liquin or Gamblin medium. You may grid, trace, or project your image onto your board. Please look at the YouTube channel I have linked to each step on our website. A classical style of Painting that starts with a monochrome and builds up with thin layers of colors.
4. Contemporary Painting one due: (Use the 18"x24" Stretched Canvas 100 Points): **Must have a figure in it, but you can be creative. If you don't have an idea, visit the online resources at www.sisavanhhoughton.weebly.com and check out the Pinterest page for inspirations and processes. Keep things simple if you are new to painting and ask questions along the way. Email me a proposed idea/sketches/pictures for this painting so you can get started.
5. Live Model Study: Six days (15 Points per day 90 points *15/day). We will use different surfaces to work on and different approaches/style of painting.
