Words of Wisdom for Future Art Businesses:
Don't reinvent the wheel! Look Up Artist's Resume to see what grants they have won, what residencies they have attended and what shows they have been in. Don't be afraid to reach out to them for their mentorship and advice. The Art World is very small.

How to Sell and Where to Sell your Artwork: artprof.org/pro-development/complete-guide-to-selling-your-art/
Galleries:
Most galleries will take 50% of the sale of your artwork. Make sure to look over the contract before you sign them. Don't ever give them all the rights to your artwork. If you sell work out of your studio space, make sure it is the same price that would have been sold in the gallery. Also make sure the gallery knows what works they can sell especially when you have numerous galleries representing you. Most galleries will have you pay for shipping to their gallery, but they will pay for shipping the artwork back to you if they can't sell it. Also, make sure there is a clause on damaged artwork. Who pays for it and what do you get if the work gets damaged. For most pricing questions you should see what other comparable artists are charging in your area. Some may price it by the inches and some by the foot. Never price the work too high because it is hard to bring it back down. Always make small, medium and large works to sell. Most artwork sells between $200-$300.

Art Fairs: artprof.org/?s=art+fairs
Commissions:
Commissions, ask for half the money before you begin and you get the rest when you have completed the artwork. Also if you do a lot of commissions I suggest putting in a clause where the client will get charged extra if you have to keep reworking the piece. Some people want perfection. Make sure the commission contract is clear and gets signed. You are the business, so treat it like one.

Taxes:
In terms of taxes, you can fill out a schedule C. You can fill all of this out on Turbo Tax by yourself. If you are making a ton of money I would suggest a LLC. Go to your local business/government agencies and you can apply for one. It is easy and cheap. If you receive grants you will get a 1099 Tax form from the company/universities you worked for, which you will have to add to your taxes. It is basically extra income. Try your best to stay organize. Use a simple envelope system/Mint/ or spreadsheet that separates your cost for: materials, meals, travel, studio upkeep, advertisement, studio space, cell phones, internet services, car/insurance. Always set aside 1/4 to a 1/3 of your sales for taxes so you have the money at the end of year to pay for it. You can set up a tax account to pay your taxes quarterly so you don't wait until the end to pay for it especially when you are a business or sell a ton of art. Your local Small Better Business Agency is a great resource for tax questions and most are free.
