Tips for Painting a Simple Portrait
- Use a value scale of 1-5. Group the figure in three main values of light, middle, and dark.
- Shadow side of the face is painted with dark value mixtures of cad. red, yellow ochre, ultra. blue and white.
- Dark tones are added in the eye sockets and underneath the nose, mouth and chin with a mixture of burnt sienna, ultra. blue, and a touch of white.
- Light flesh tones are applied on the upper part of the face with a mixture of cadmium red, yellow ochre, and enough with to approach a 4 on the value scale.
- The cooler mixtures of yellow ochre, cadmium red, ultra. blue, and white are applied on the lower part of the head.
- Next, the same tones plus more white are added to the lighted side of the head.
- More cadmium red is used for the warm color passages across the cheeks, nose, and mouth.
- The forehead and the tip of the nose receive them most light, so they are painted with mixture of cad. red, yellow ochre, and a lot of white.
- The neck is usually much cooler than the head, so the colors used here can be c cooled with burnt sienna, yellow ochre, ultra. blue, or chrome green.
- Next, dark mixtures of burnt sienna and ultra. blue are added to the shadows to strengthen the form.
